Energy savings: committee backs binding national targets and CO2 set aside plan
EU countries would have to set themselves binding national energy efficiency targets, and save energy by specific means such as renovating public buildings, under a draft EU directive approved by the Energy Committee on Tuesday. This directive would not only save energy, but also reduce CO2 emissions, and hence demand for emission allowances under the EU's emissions trading scheme, notes the committee.

EU SUSTAINABLE ENERGY WEEK: Commission will announce action on smart meters for more savings
Between 11 and 15 April 2011, more than 30 000 participants in 43 countries will discuss energy efficiency and renewable energy during the 2011 edition of the EU Sustainable Week.
