Invitation to the 3rd Atlantic Forum: “Maritime space management and climate change mitigation under the ecosystem approach”

For some years now, the European Union has been promoting an integrated Maritime Policy with the aim of offering a more coherent approach to maritime affairs and improved coordination between relevant actors and sectors.

In this context, the European Commission adopted an Atlantic Strategy last year. The strategy is a roadmap to develop the potential and manage the specific threats and opportunities of the Atlantic in the fields of environment, energy, the economy and security. The “Atlantic Forum” was recently put in place to allow all key public private key stakeholders to provide their ideas and proposals.
Within the framework of this Forum, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in charge of coordination of Common Policies and General Affairs of the European Union, the Counselling in charge of Fisheries and Food Industries of the Basque government and the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Commission, organize, on November 12, at the Palacio Euskalduna in Bilbao, the conference “Maritime space management and climate change mitigation under the ecosystem approach”.
This conference will seek to present solutions to one of the issues highlighted by the strategy, i.e. how to apply the ecosystem approach to the Atlantic space. To this end, four workshops will take place on the following subjects:
• How to apply the ecosystem approach in fisheries management: to identify actions that could be developed in the Atlantic area with the view to guaranteeing “good environmental status”, as regards fisheries in particular.
• Offshore aquaculture: to identify projects that could be developed in the framework of the Atlantic strategy, considering the industry’s current status and its technological needs.
• Renewable energies: to analyze ways and means to further develop this sector into a major player in the electricity sector, considering the experience gained in several countries on marine renewable energies.
• Inter-modal transport and maritime security: to analyze how to further develop inter-modality in transport and how to fight against maritime pollution, in the light of experience gained in several countries.
