CLIMATLANTIC project presents its results to the European Commission

Brussels, 2th October 2012.- After two years of intense work, the project CLIMATLANTIC is close to its conclusion. As part of its communication strategy, experts from the five countries of the Atlantic Area that are part of the project presented the achieved results at a seminar organized at the Permanent Representation of Portugal in Brussels.

The content of the seminar was essentially focused on the strategic document prepared by the think tank of the project and its relationship with the future Atlantic Strategy that is being developed by the Commission, as well as on the first results of the pilot projects related to each thematic pillar (Energy, Mobility, Territorial Management and Social Behaviour).
For the coordinator of the think tank, Emilio Fernández Suárez, the main goal of CLIMATLANTIC has been the development of a strategy for the Atlantic Area focused on the reduction of the carbon footprint in our society. This strategy has much to contribute to the work of the Commission, as it offers complementary contents to the maritime approach, also essential for the sustainable and coordinated development of the Atlantic Area.
The seminar was attended, in addition, by representatives of the European Commission directly related to the development of the future Atlantic Strategy (DG MARE and DG REGIO), as well as the Conference of Cities of the Atlantic Arc, who took into account the results of the project.
From their side, the representatives of the European Commission also underlined the need of coordination between the Maritime Policy and the Cohesion Policy, and the vital involvement of regions, as well as their active role at the different meetings of the Atlantic Forum, one recently held in Portugal and other two planned in Brest (29th October) and Bilbao (12th November).
The importance of the Atlantic Strategy lies on the fact that it is called to be a reference document, as the strategies of the Mediterranean, the Baltic or the Danube, which are already operating, to guide the priorities for the action of the Community Funds for the period 2014-2020 in these areas.
