CPMR (Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions) meeting on September 10 to discuss future of maritime transport with EU Commission

09.09.2013

On 10 September 2013, the CPMR’s Intercommission Working Group on Transport will meet in Brussels. The first session will focus on assessing the extent to which the CPMR’s proposals on the CEF and TEN-T have been taken into consideration, in preparation of the accessibility session of the CPMR General Assembly in Saint-Malo on 27 September.

During a second session chaired by the Region of Nord-Pas de Calais, the working group, together with representatives from the European Commission (DG MOVE), shall discuss the development of maritime transport policy from 2014. The Commission has launched numerous initiatives in this area over the last few months, which the CPMR welcomes, as it regularly calls for a genuine European policy to support this industry.

The Regions will pose two crucial questions to DG MOVE:

- Which European support mechanisms will be used for shipping lanes that help reduce congestion on European roads and improve the transport sector’s carbon footprint? Marco Polo, the only European programme dedicated to these issues, will be completed at the end of 2013: how does the Commission plan to propose support through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF)?

- In light of the sulphur challenge that the professionals and public authorities involved in maritime transport are faced with, what ambitious mechanism will the EU “put on the table” to avoid the new Directive resulting in today’s sea freight returning to the roads? On 28 June 2013, the Commission published a progress report on the implementation of the toolbox that it published in 2011. To what extent does this report satisfy the maritime regions, which put forward a series of proposals during the seminar held in Dunkirk in March 2013?
